We interviewed Alinta Ratnaike, owner of local favourite ice creamery, Royal Copenhagen. She tells us all about her Semaphore story and why she chooses to call this beautiful place home.
Who are you?
I’m Alinta Ratnaike. I own Royal Copenhagen Semaphore and am also the co-owner of Barry’s Burger with my brother, Chris.
How long have you lived in Semaphore? And how long have you operated this local business?
I moved into the area with my family when I was 10 and they still live 5 minutes away from the shops. Royal Copenhagen has been open for 6.5 years and Barry’s Burgers has been open for 2.5 years.
What do you like most about Semaphore?
It is a very casual, easy going and relaxed suburb. I LOVE working right next to the beach. Friends often comment that it feels a bit like a little country town and I agree.
Can you tell us something about yourself that not many people would know?
I was at Uni studying law before opening Royal Copenhagen in 2011. I felt I wasn’t yet ready for an ‘office job’ and really loved working in hospitality and near the beach. It’s almost 7 years later and I still feel the same (and am still waiting to tire of eating desserts haha)
