We interviewed Chris Ratnaike, owner of local burger joint, Barry’s Burgers. He tells us all about his Semaphore story and why he chooses to call this beautiful place home.
Who are you?
I’m Chris Ratnaike from Barry’s Burgers located on Semaphore road.
How long have you lived in Semaphore? And how long have you operated this local business?
I grew up in the neighbouring Western suburbs and have been living within walking distance to Semaphore Road for over a year. The shop has been open for just over 2 years, but I’ve been running the daily operations for over the last 6 months.
What do you like most about Semaphore?
The country town feel of the suburb, one half of my family grew up in the Eyre Peninsula. So we would spend lots of our childhood holidays in country towns during Summer. I hadn’t felt that same feeling until I properly started living in Semaphore. You can walk down the street and you see the same characters, you have all your local spots with people you know. It’s a very comforting and unique place to be a part of, I don’t think there are many places like this left.
Can you tell us something about yourself that not many people would know?
I used to work as a sailor on a yacht for a few years and I was lucky enough to travel across the Pacific and Atlantic Ocean by boat. Hence my Nautical/Sailor Jerry tattoos and how much I love working and living close to the sea!
